Clara Spilliaert's work is part of the collection presentation Beeldenstroom at CERA, Leuven (BE).
In this exhibition, we are talking about images. Of course, most exhibitions do that, but this one does so a little more consciously.
Every day, we are surrounded by a constant stream of images: billboards and brochures, images on your feed, statues, but also the drawings in your cappuccino… We hardly even notice them anymore. Some images we consume quickly and for free; others we take the time to engage with and are even willing to pay for.
What does this mean for art and its audience?
Many artists from the younger generation are exploring this “hypervisual culture”: What do all these images do to our brains, our consciousness, our bodies and our lives? Their art reflects on what it means to live in a constant stream of images—image upon image.
For this exhibition, we are not only inviting the public to explore works from Cera’s collection around this theme. We have also invited contemporary amateur artists to create new images inspired by the exhibition.
