Koen Theys‘ installation Diasporalia, which was first introduced at the Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp, will be exhibited at the Drents Museum, Assen, The Netherlands.
The exhibition opens February 15th, 2:30 – 5 pm and will be on view till September 13th, 2020.
Diasporalia is a collection of 12 unique painted bronze mattresses presented as a dormitory. The mattresses contain personal belongings which symbolize the unique but recognizable identities of each of the persons to whom they belong, the only thing missing are the people themselves. The absence of the owners invites us to look at the belongings more attentively as we try to figure out the lives behind them. Diasporalia clearly taps into the current refugee crisis. It’s a confrontation with the on-looker of overwhelming proportion.
