Antoine Roegiers France, b. 1980

Biography

Antoine Roegiers (b. 1980, Braine-l’Alleud, Belgium) is a painter and multimedia artist whose work bridges centuries of artistic practice, bringing the visual language of the Old Masters into contemporary life with wit, narrative depth, and technical virtuosity. Roegiers lives and works in France and graduated with honours from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2007, where he was awarded the Prix Roger Bataille.

From the outset of his career, Roegiers has engaged deeply with the tradition of Flemish and Northern European painting. Inspired by the complex worldbuilding of Pieter Bruegel, the visionary fantasy of Hieronymus Bosch, and the dynamism of Peter Paul Rubens, he also draws on the work of 19th-century Belgian figures such as James Ensor, Félicien Rops, and Léon Spilliaert. These historical touchstones are not mere references but fertile sources for creative reinvention, as Roegiers extracts and reimagines forms, characters, and compositional devices with remarkable fluency.

Roegiers works across a wide range of media and techniques — from oil painting on wood and canvas to pen and acrylic drawing, and importantly, video animation. His practice is rooted in a profound command of draftsmanship and classical painting, yet animated by a restless curiosity about movement, narrative and modern imagery. Central to his work since 2018 is an ambitious ongoing project of visual narrative: a series of interconnected paintings that unfold a single story over several years. These works resist easy interpretation, presenting fragmented episodes that invite viewers to assemble their own narratives from overlapping scenes of surreal drama, humour, and poetic imagination.

Through his richly detailed imagery and narrative complexity, Antoine Roegiers creates a unique visual language that dialogues with art history while engaging with contemporary concerns — from human folly to ecological unease — in ways that are at once imaginative, critical, and deeply compelling.

The work of Antoine Roegiers has been shown at museums and institutions such as the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Bozar in Brussels, the Harvard Art Museums, and the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián, among many others.
