Jiří Georg Dokoupil acquired international fame in the late 70’s and 80’s thanks to his ability to constantly switch mediums and by not committing to one specific style, as founding member of the Mulheimer Freiheit – movement based in Cologne and as a leading figure in the German Free Movement (Junge Wilden). His untraditional views on painting makes him one of the most forward-thinking artists of his time. As painter he often makes paintings without pencil or paint but instead opts for candle soot, car tires, fruit, foam, soap… His immense freedom, imagination and fascination for eroticism and chemical processes are the key focus in his oeuvre.
The Soap Bubble Paintings are the artist’s clearest expression of freedom. The hypnotizing movements and colors used in the works evoke a feeling of weightlessness and being completely absorbed into the painting. Dokoupil redefines figurative art yet again by celebrating the power of color and form in all its freedom.
