Guy Van Bossche is part of the inaugural group exhibition at The Illegal Club, Antwerp (BE).
TICK TACK opens The Illegal Club: a new permanent space for sound and performance in the former air-raid shelter of De Zonnewijzer, the Brutalist monument designed by Léon Stynen in 1955.
The Illegal Club opens with Pressure Chamber, the sound installation that Nik Nowak (b. 1981, Mainz) built for the club in the former shelter. The Berlin-based artist constructs sound systems as sculptures and explores how amplified sound has been used as a weapon, propaganda, armour and cultural catalyst: from the loudspeaker war along the Berlin Wall to the sound systems of Jamaican elections in the 1970s and their global afterlife.
For the opening, The Illegal Club expands from the former shelter into the entire building. On the ground floor and mezzanine, more than fifty artists living and working in Belgium each present a studio work that emerged off the record: an experiment, an early work, a detour from the main trajectory of a practice.
